The Arctic Circle, home to many different species of marine mammals and fish, has an impact that is larger than most people realize. The Science Center’s newest OMNIMAX® film, To The Arctic, takes viewers to the Arctic Circle to view the breath-taking landscape and explore the problems that are plaguing this region and its inhabitants.
To The Arctic takes spectators on a never before seen journey into the lives of a mother polar bear and her two seven-month old cubs as they navigate the changing Arctic wilderness they call home. Captivating, adventurous and intimate footage brings viewers up close and personal with this family’s struggle to survive and thrive in a frigid environment of melting ice, immense glaciers, spectacular waterfalls and majestic snow-bound peaks.
“To The Arctic opens Earth Day weekend to remind us of the important role we play in preserving the Earth and all of its creatures,” said Jackie Mollet, Senior Director of Theater, Retail & Exhibitions. “Only 20,000 polar bears remain in the wild, and their survival is in jeopardy due to the threats their environment is facing.”
The film shows the true beauty of a land that few have had the opportunity to see a land whose future is in question. The Arctic Ice Cap is constantly shrinking and, by the year 2050, it will be reduced to a small area off the coast of Canada and Greenland. These changes place the 20,000 remaining polar bears at risk of extinction.
