Indy, the dog gives the performance of a lifetime in Good Boy, from co-writer & director Ben Leonberg. While man’s best friend is no stranger to Hollywood, often leading family friendly fare such as A Dog’s Journey and classics like Beethoven and Homeward Bound, Leonberg provides audiences with something unique and enthralling here; a canine protagonist navigating his way through the Horror genre. Although, to be fair, this film is more suspense and drama than anything else, but it can generate some scares for some. Leonberg also gives us a unique vision, as the film is told entirely from Indy’s point of view.
The film gives audiences just the right amount of suspense while exploring themes such as loyalty and grievance. If you have ever had the pleasure of living with a canine friend, you know that sometimes their attention is captured by the unseen and often we find them entranced, still and focused on that dark corner in the room, or maybe those woods outside. That’s exactly what Leonberg so eloquently explores here. As viewers, we’re exposed to the tension that Indy feels throughout the entire film. From the opening scene on, Indy conveys this with great emotive skills. We know something’s not right, and Indy pulls us along for the ride as we discover the true nature of his fear and distress. However, before that journey begins, Leonberg gives audiences the perfect montage that’s sure to pull at the heart strings and appeal to our emotions as we see Indy’s growth from a pup on, cementing the fact that he’s a special dog. His loyalty to his owner is unwavering, and it’s really their relationship that’s the driving force behind this film, leading to a conclusion that some audiences are sure to see coming, all the while packing a serious emotional punch none the less.
The most impressive thing about this film is the fact that it wasn’t produced by that Hollywood machine, and it’s all the better for it. Leonberg made this film independently. He had a vision that his dog, Indy, could deliver the performance needed to make it work. It took over three years to make because Leonberg wanted Indy’s reactions to be genuine. Of course, many dog treats were used to ensure this. The fact that Indy is not a trained professional in the industry is astounding, which also speaks to both Indy’s and Leonberg’s dedication and talent.
Regardless of whether you’re a horror fan, dog lover, or simply a casual film lover, Good Boy is sure to please and entertain. It’s available now to rent or purchase on all digital platforms.
