Attendees won’t want to miss presentations by The Renegade Gardener for expert tips to help create the yard and garden they’ve always wanted! Don Engebretson, The Renegade Gardener, is a former Field Editor and garden scout for Better Homes and Gardens magazine and writes for a variety of newspapers and magazines across the country. He was the gardening guru on HGTV’s hit show, TIPical Mary Ellen, and spent time as a landscape design expert on the popular PBS program, HOMETIME.
A professional landscape designer, Don has a witty, insightful take on the state of gardening in America today. He preaches that the joy of gardening comes from experimentation, and a passion for gardening comes from failing, laughing, succeeding and learning. People can attend one of his presentations for tips and techniques on how to become a better gardener. Don’s presentations include Yes You Can! Landscape Design for Homeowners during which he’ll take attendees through every step of the design process and instill the knowledge and confidence needed to create a beautiful yard, garden and overall landscape and Common Gardening Myths and the Mayhem They Cause. In this fast-paced primer, Don dispenses with false notions created by common gardening myths by replacing error with the truth about fertilizers, wood mulch, landscape fabric, chemical products, lawn mower settings, planting procedures, soil amendments, and many more.
Plus, attendees can have a FREE One-on-One Landscape Consultation with The Renegade Gardener! After each presentation, Don will be available to answer personal landscape design questions. What’s a good tree to plant in this spot? What shrubs will grow in our shady backyard? Visitors can bring phone photos of their problem areas and get advice from The Renegade Gardener himself! (Time-permitting, one question per person please.)
HBA Home Shows are always family-friendly, so bring the kids. There will be a Family Fun Area where kids can have a good time and be creative, all for free. Kids can color and even become gardeners! They can spend time decorating their own pot, then plant their own seeds. They can take their plant home, care for it, and watch it grow into a beautiful, flowering marigold.
The Home Show is hosting a Food Drive. Visitors can help their neighbors in need by donating to the St. Louis Area Foodbank and are encouraged to bring non-perishable food in non-breakable containers. Suggested items include: peanut butter, tuna, canned meats and beans; canned fruits and vegetables, fruit juice, jellies, jams and dried fruit; cereal, oatmeal, rice and crackers; pasta and sauce, boxed meals, soups and stews; and baby products like powdered formula, baby food, diapers and wipes.
