Moving Forward to Create a New Life

Dr Gail Cloud

By Dr. Gail Cloud

I watched a series on Netflix the other week called, American Primeval. It is a realistic and well written story about the development of Utah and the intersections of the settlers, the Indians, the United States military and the Mormons. What a fascinating period of time and history we as a nation lived. It was filled with violence, adventure, individualists, and a gross misunderstanding and misappropriate use of our connection with the land and what some referred to as the Mormon connection with “God”.

That said, within the story were some touching portrayals of humanity. One individual, Mr. Reed, was a rugged man, raised since a little boy by the Shoshone and suffered extreme losses enough to shut him down. The story was told through the characters. This Mr. Reed was introduced to a woman and her son who were running away from an event that occurred in Philadelphia in which bounty hunters were sent to look for her. Through their connection in their journey to a small town in Utah with Mr. Reed as a guide, they grew close through those trying to capture her, the hardships of crossing the Wasatch range in winter, and all the beauty and hardships which befell them. Without ruining the story for you, Mr. Reed was presented with an opportunity to move forward in a new way and start a new family with this woman and her son, or to go back to what was familiar, and what he knew, and to live alone. As with all of us, the choice was a difficult one for him to make. Ultimately he couldn’t make it.

There are so many of us who are trapped in our histories and our wounds and our early stories that we can’t move forward. And yet, almost all of the time, if we can allow ourselves to walk forward, we have the ability to create something new. This story was so very poignant.
