Why September is My Favorite Month

September has always been my favorite month, not because it’s my birthday month, but because it heralds the arrival of cooler weather and reduced humidity. It also brings the stunning transformation of leaves, which begin to change color in September, with the peak of fall foliage often occurring in October. Living in a region rich with parks and trails allows us to fully appreciate these vibrant autumn colors, especially in Missouri and Illinois. For me, this is the best time to hike and to be outdoors and my dogs appreciate the cooler weather as well.

Growing up in the Adirondacks of northern NY, taught me that every season is beautiful when we seek out nature for adventure or relaxation or bonding with family, friends or pets. But for me, the breathtaking fall colors in the Adirondacks are etched in my mind like nothing else is. Just bringing up those memories brings a profound sense of peace and serenity that is truly unmatched.

One of the highlights of fall is the Farmers Markets. Our area boasts some of the best markets around, where you can enjoy fresh, seasonal produce and local goods. For a comprehensive guide to Farmers Markets in Illinois, Missouri, and beyond, check out nfmd.org.

This issue of The Healthy Planet is filled with tips on making the most of September. ARTful Living showcases upcoming art events, and Southern Illinois is perfect for a scenic road trip. Fall is also the season for numerous festivals every weekend, and a visit to a local winery is a must. Don’t miss the Mississippi Earth Tones Festival the 21st—an annual event that’s always impressive. On the 27-28 is the Internal Spirit Holistic Fair in Bridgeton.

As families settle into the school year, September is an ideal time to focus on your health before the winter months confine us indoors. Each edition of The Healthy Planet features valuable advice from healthcare professionals to help you stay healthy and informed.

Before the cold sets in, it’s also wise to give your gardens and outdoor plants a check-up. Sugar Creek Gardens in Kirkwood offers expert advice on fall planting for flowers, shrubs, and trees.

Embrace the start of fall and all the activities it brings. I’m looking forward to enjoying everything September has to offer as we transition from summer to autumn.
