The U.S. Green Building Council — Missouri Gateway Chapter, in partnership with St. Louis Earth Day and St. Louis Green, is now accepting creative proposals for our September 10, 2013 program. We are seeking presenters and topic ideas surrounding the theme of ‘DIY’ (Do It Yourself) Sustainability. Presentations will be made using the Pecha Kucha format which draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat” and allows presenters to showcase 20 slides that are set on a timer for 20 seconds per slide. This fast pace and fun approach will allow for a variety of subjects to be covered in a brief amount of time. Preference will be given to topics relevant to the built environment, but all ideas are welcome and encouraged! Proposals are due on July 15th at 5:00 pm. A Celebration of the Baby Tooth Survey
One of the great civic efforts in St. Louis history, will take place on July 31 and August 1. The 1958-1970 Survey was conducted by scientists and citizens. About 320,000 baby teeth were collected and tested in a laboratory, finding rising levels of radioactivity in bodies. The research was published in medical journals, and sent to the White House, speeding passage of the treaty signed by President John F. Kennedy banning above-ground tests and sharply reducing fallout in humans.
The celebration will include a July 31 press conference and film screening, and an August 1 panel discussion. Co-sponsors are the Missouri History Museum, Missouri Coalition for the Environment, and Radiation and Public Health Project.
