Sustainability at Schools
A Green Schools workshop for St. Louis school personnel and interested parents will offer cost-saving examples of adopting up-to-the-minute sustainability practices. The free November 2 sessions will explore operational cost-savings and political facts of going green, as well as student engagement in the process. The 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. program with eight concurrent classes will be at the LEED Silver Harris-Stowe State University Early Childhood Development / Parenting Education Center, 10 No. Compton in St. Louis 63103. Topics include school building design and operations, student initiatives, sustainability models and school cultures. Further, reducing food and materials waste, conserving heating, cooling and lighting energy and engaging families in green routines will be discussed in concurrent sessions. “From the trenches” energy initiatives in nine local schools will be reviewed. Also, the eco-friendly, state-wide, bi-partisan Green Schools Caucus will be outlined, along with its support and impact. “A Case For Sustainability – Local Schools Go Green” is presented by the U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter; Cooperating School Districts; St. Louis County and St. Louis Community College. The keynote session is on a Bowling Green Kentucky’s school construction where the nation’s first Net-Zero Energy elementary school is thriving. As the district changed mindsets and behaviors, it offset $6 million in energy costs in less than eight years. Plan to Attend Star Trek First Fridays! Put on your Spock ears and come to the Science Center on the first Friday evening of each month during the run of Star Trek: The Exhibition! In addition to touring the exhibition for a special evening rate, you can participate in a Public Telescope Viewing outside the Planetarium and see the new Star Trek-inspired Planetarium show. Learn more about how science fiction has inspired scientific endeavors. At 9 pm, gather in the Fizz Factory for music and then, at 10 pm head to the OMNIMAX® theater to view a Star Trek film. The 10 pm Star Trek movie will change each month; stay tuned for the schedule! Each Star TrekFirst Friday will feature a special activity; on Friday, November 4, participate in a Star Trek costume contest! All proceeds from the event will benefit EarthDance’s educational programming, such as its 9-month long Organic Farming Apprenticeship program that teaches people sustainable agriculture from seed to market, as well as Camp EarthDance, a farm-to-table summer camp for local middle schoolers. Cyclists to help collect food for Food Outreach with cycling fundraiser. Sunday, November 6, leave at 10 a.m. Finish times vary. Longer route should finish by approximately 1 p.m. Who: Bicyclists of all ages and riding-levels. 6th Annual Cranksgiving: BicycleWORKS non-perishable food-raising bike ride for area food pantries. Food items collected for event will be donated to Food Outreach. Start and end at Schlafly Bottleworks, 7260 Southwest Ave., Maplewood, MO 63143. Three routes will be available for riding at approximately 5, 10 and 25 miles. Why: More people are using food pantries than ever before. As a fundraiser, cyclists typically spend $10-$20 total at participating grocers (TBA) and carry their own non-perishable items on the ride. Put on by local non-profit BicycleWORKS volunteers, proceeds go to Food Outreach another local non-profit. Cash donations are also accepted.
