During this time of year in the Western hemisphere I think of it being time to harvest my garden. I think of things dying. I think of shorter and darker days, and colder days before the earth heats up again and things start regrowing and blossoming. In other words, I think of death and dying; and I think of what this also opens up for us. What is painful about this process is the thought of going into the darkness and dark days, and even at times, the moments of the dark night of the soul. We also often go through the loss of someone or something very important to us. It is painful. There is no other word I know that better describes this feeling.
Healing our hearts takes time and compassion towards ourselves and kindness. It can take us to dark places inside of us as well. What I do know is that the older and wiser I become, these dark places move and as we continue to move through them, light and lightness of being shows itself and feels itself again inside of us. We just have to let us go through the process instead of becoming frightened and stopping it. When we do, we stay in darkness and dark places much longer. It gets scarier.
So, let us feel. Let us invite the pain as well as the beauty and blossoming and becoming. Let us trust.
Trusting is not easy for many of us. When we doubt, let’s look outside daily and notice the little changes that occur in nature. One day, notice that the sun rose just a little bit earlier that day or stayed a bit later that afternoon. Notice how the leaves change and depart the tree branches, and then slowly begin to re-emerge.
Let us notice those little daily things that remind us that life continues. We choose how we want to live. This can be conscious, and it can be unconscious. The more we notice, the more choices we do have.
So this season, let’s notice these little things.
