Meditation Can Be Done Anywhere

Dr Gail Cloud

By Dr. Gail Cloud

It dawned on me that many people get intimidated by the idea of meditating or feel like they can’t do it as their minds are so active. So, I am sharing with you that you really can.

Meditation is not something you have to do alone in a room, on a mountain top, with gurus, or even with emptying your mind.

Meditation can be any activity where you become present to yourself.

So, doing a puzzle, looking at a painting for 5 minutes or more, lighting a candle and watching its flames, taking a walk and just letting your mind wander, sitting and watching the sunset or sunrise, are all examples of meditating. In other words, it is easy to carve out some meditation time every day, you just have to reframe your concept of meditation.

Getting up and sitting outside and listening to the bird song is meditating. Any activity which takes you away from your to-do list and where you have to just focus on what you are doing is a type of meditation. Each type helps in different ways.

Sometimes, I just take time to breathe deeply for a few minutes and just focus on my breath. Sometimes I talk with my guides and ancestors in my mind. The idea is to give your mind/brain a respite during the day.

At night when it is too cold to go outside, I light my fireplace and just watch the flames and light play with each other. If it is nice outside, I just go outside and sit and look and listen.
