I was talking with a client recently about blind faith. This is in the context that at times, having blind faith is helpful and in fact is what helps us get through challenging times.
As I continued thinking about this, something else dawned on me. Every one of us has times of crisis and even a dark night of the soul. Sometimes they last a long time and sometimes are more short lived. But when we are in those places, they seem to last forever. Sometimes they are related to paradigm shifts. Sometimes to difficult transitions in life. Sometimes to responses towards profound grief. Sometimes to even questioning whether you even want to continue to live….to get to a place of even, “what’s the point”?
Regardless, these times are very challenging. When we are there, we see darkness. It is like we are travelling through a tunnel, and we are in the middle of the tunnel and there is no light. Will it end? When will it end? The problem is we don’t know. Now, we could then just turn tail and run back. But run to where? Or, we could panic and stay stuck and stay in the middle of that dark tunnel. Or, we could just keep moving forward, one step at a time and taking the chance to see what happens. We know what happens if we go back. We know what happens if we stay stuck. We don’t know what happens if we move forward one step at a time. It hit me; this is blind faith. We keep moving even though we have no idea what is in front of us and even if there will be light at the end.
Sometimes that is just what we need. The blind, we can’t see what is in front of us or what will be. Faith to keep trucking; one step in front of the other. Where do we get this? We make the decision to move forward with some energy or force helping us to move one step at a time, not knowing if or when the light will begin to show.
Having blind faith can be a good thing. And sometimes we need a guide to help us shine a flashlight for each step, just a little light as we navigate through the tunnel.
If you personally, or if you know of someone who might need this, please reach out and set up a session with me, or with someone trained to guide you through these times.
