When the Cameras Leave, the Loss is Still There

Susan Hunt-Bradford

As the November issue of The Healthy Planet comes together, my thoughts are heavily weighed down by the recent hurricanes that have wreaked havoc along the southeast. The images of destruction, the stories of lives lost, and the need for help from those affected resonate deeply within me. My heart aches not just for the individuals and families who have endured overwhelming hardships but also for the countless animals caught in the path of destruction.

With the holiday season approaching, I have become increasingly aware that even though the news stations have left, the hurricane victims have a long road ahead. How do they celebrate this joyous season when their home or business no longer stands? They continue to grieve for family and friends.

As we gather around tables adorned with festive decorations, sharing meals and laughter, it is important to acknowledge those suffering. While we cherish our traditions, we must also extend our compassion beyond our immediate circles. In doing so, we can foster a sense of community that transcends geographical boundaries, knowing that we are part of a more significant cause that brings us together.

We can take action to support recovery efforts for those affected by hurricanes and other natural disasters. Donating to relief organizations, volunteering time, or simply spreading awareness can significantly impact the lives of those in need. We can make a difference, and it’s our responsibility.

Natural disasters remind us that nature is far more powerful than we are. Nature calls for a deep respect for the environment and a commitment to protecting it. As we enjoy the comforts of our homes during the holiday season, let’s also reflect on our responsibility towards Mother Nature.

As we prepare our celebrations, let’s hold space in our hearts for the humans and animals impacted by hurricanes and other natural disasters worldwide. Their strength in adversity reminds us of the power of community and compassion.

November 15th, America Recycles Day, serves as a timely reminder that our actions matter—not just in how we treat our environment but also in how we support one another. Let’s commit to being better stewards of our planet and more compassionate global community members. Together, we can create a better future for all sharing this earth, ensuring that our holiday spirit extends beyond our families and into the lives of those in need.
