Think About Setting a New Type of Resolution
Far too many people adopt resolutions around the same stale goals (weight loss, money and exercise), year after year, only to end up feeling like a failure yet again. This year make a resolution to shed yourself of the limiting labels that are responsible for your seeming inability to move forward and accomplish your goals. “I’m too fat…I’m no good with money…I’m unlovable…I’m not a good enough parent…I can’t pick good partners….I have depression, etc.” Soon you believe the labels, begin to feel limited in what you can actually accomplish and there the evolution of the self-fulfilling prophecy begins. This New Year make a decision to end your self-defeating narrative, so you can remove the self-imposed roadblocks and see just how far you can go.

Take The Train – Amtrak
Did you know that traveling by rail contributes less per passenger mile to greenhouse gas emissions than either cars or airplanes? According to U.S. Department of Energy data, Amtrak is 11 percent more efficient than domestic airline travel and 31 percent more efficient than auto travel on a per-passenger-mile basis. Amtrak is also committed to making recycling an integral part of train travel — onboard, in our stations and in our train yards. So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride while making an impact on our environment!

Focusing on Positive Goals for the New Year
Well, its that time of year again when people all over the world start setting their new years resolutions. And, that’s always a good thing! By far, the most popular of all resolutions is losing weight and getting healthy. In 2015, Focus on Positive Goals with your diet, rather than deprivation. All too many people focus on “I’m not eating this”, “I’m giving up that”, “No more of this”, etc. when they start changing their dietary habits. Instead, focus your dietary goals around eating more of what your body needs: Lots of Lean proteins, Fruits, Vegetables, and Water! Focus on getting good stuff in, not so much on “keeping the bad stuff out.”

Take Action for the Animals
Will 2016 be the year the plight of animals is eased because of YOU? Volunteer at an animal shelter! Whether you are motivated because of sadness regarding conditions animals face, an inspiring story of a rescue or anger resulting from an abuse case, take action. Some shrug the stories off, some say “what a shame” and some shed a tear for the suffering but YOU stepped forward and decided to ACT, to HELP, to MAKE A DIFFERENCE! The animals will benefit because you gave your time, your most precious commodity. May you always know the joy of caring and sharing!

Book Lovers, Share the Gift!
Books are a gift, offering new ideas, needed information, and an escape from daily life. If you find yourself with more than you need, and have the urge to purge, then recycle them for others to enjoy! At Earthbound Recycling, we accept donations of gently used fictional books, and pay 10 cents a lb. for most non-fiction books. Some are sold at reasonable prices, and the rest are sent to Better World Books, a company that supports literacy programs worldwide. Share the joy, and pass on the gift of learning.

Learn to Relax and Improve Your Moods with Essential Oils
Essential oils are very powerful and can be used with wonderful results. Aromatherapy can change your mood, lift your spirits or totally relax you. Depending on the type of stress you are experiencing, you may want to try one of the following blends: For tension, lavender and orange are good choices. For anxiety, you may want to try cedar and ylang-ylang. For irritability or anger, try bergamot and chamomile. For relaxation or sleeplessness, lavender is the best. There are a variety of ways to use the oils, either by diffusing, in a bath, a sachet or just simply sniffing. With the exception of lavender oil, never put these oils directly on your skin without diluting in a carrier oil.

Shop at Thrift Stores
One in six people are shopping in thrift stores for desire rather than need. So take time to browse purposefully and discover that lamp shade that can have a scarf added as an accent or those vintage jeans that can be dissected and turned into a hand bag. You can turn old broken jewelry into new statement items with a glue gun and a little wire. You can be the talk of the town for a fraction of the cost. It pays to be Thrifty.

Make Friends With Plants
My work with the plant is a lifelong process and has been key to my personal welfare. Plants are incredible tools for self-transformation. Making wreaths and remedies from the wild native plants living on our land has furnished me with the tools to heal my body, mind and spirit. The intelligence within the plant can deeply influence your life and aid your journey. Plants are not innate objects but living, growing green beings that react to your presence, your energy and your thoughts. Plants are wise teachers and faithful friends. It is a rewarding and sacred relationship.

Communi-Tea. Drink Tea that Makes a Difference.
In 2015 we started carrying several “Direct Trade” (Farmer Direct) teas, allowing farmers to receive 60% value vs. 15% from commodity markets. Many of these teas are produced by small families in remote areas, the way tea was likely enjoyed 2000+ years ago. They taste remarkably different. The variety and quality is extraordinary. Plus we’re improving lives for these small communities. Drinking these teas, I feel happy and uplifted, calmed and relaxed. THIS is why tea became popular and was coveted. Heal with Clean Filtered Water
We are exposed to toxins in our air, food, and water every day. Make sure to drink only pure, filtered water to flush toxins away. Depending on your weight, drink 75-150 ounces of water per day. Also, use the power of clean filtered water to help you detoxify through colon hydrotherapy. The process is comfortable, with warm water used at very gentle pressure for 40 minutes. Client draping protects privacy. The procedure also helps with IBS, constipation, parasites, and more.

Growing for Greater Good
Gardening is therapeutic, relaxing and very rewarding. Gardening actually results in happiness. Scientific studies have shown that being in close contact with the soil increases serotonin levels and that harvesting the fruits of our labor can increase dopamine levels. Soil bacteria also helps to boost our immune system and of course eating fresh organically grown fruits, vegetables and herbs can improve overall health and vitality. But there is more to gardening than self-fulfillment. Gardens attract pollinators. They create food and habitats for wildlife. Gardens help build friendships, transform neighborhoods, build resilient communities, strengthen local economies and truly help to mend the soil if they are planted and maintained using ecologically sound methods. School gardens, community gardens, urban farms and small scale working organic farms are popping up all over the place. The good food movement is on the rise as more and more folks are paying attention to where there food comes from. Growing for the greater good holds reverence to the importance of earth healing. Restoring ecosystems, planting trees, growing food-not lawns, planting native plants, practicing permaculture techniques, implementing rain gardening and rainwater catchment, composting, promoting soil health, improving water quality are all ways individuals can contribute toward a more sustainable future for people and the environment. How To Talk With Your Teenager About Fear
In these challenging times with so much fear and uncertainty on the planet, having open conversations with our children serves as a powerful antidote. First, normalize feeling afraid and vulnerable when painful and tragic events occur. Second, calmly listen to their worries and resist the urge to overly reassure. Third, empower them to choose love over fear when fear arises. Develop a simple ritual, such as a favorite saying or a line from a song, that they can use when they feel afraid that re-connects them to feeling loved.

Eat Veggies In The Morning?
Although most people don’t think about including vegetables at breakfast, adding them to eggs is a great way to ensure you’ll meet your day’s recommended number of servings. Add in a variety of your favorite colorful vegetables to your omelet in the morning and you already have a jump-start on getting your veggies in.”

Relax…
it is the first and most important principle of our t’ai chi practice. A person who is relaxed is more able to approach life with an open mind and attitude. One is more likely to see people as human beings, more likely to hear what they are really saying and thus able to assess with a calm mind instead of an emotional one. A relaxed body allows for better posture and improved balance which in turn results in less back and joint issues. The simple act of learning to relax your breathing has a calming effect on your whole body. The St. Louis T’ai Chi Ch’uan Association, taichistlouis.org 314-961-1355.

Consider the Health of Your Trees
When I have a request to remove a tree, I ask for a reason. Trees add value to property, and purify the air. Consider a hazard tree assessment. Trees that have withstood years of wind, water and years of drought, are worth such an assessment. Tree surgery can also add many years to a tree’s life, yet few practice this anymore. ‘Arborists’ once were called ‘tree surgeons’. Consider when, why, what, and where to prune. Opening a tree cavity to the air and light slows and compartmentalizes decay. Tree species were CREATED with certain character traits. Knowing a little bit about a tree, helps us know a little more about our creator.

Eat More Real, Whole Food
The most delicious New Year’s resolution combines all of the other ones about diet, exercise, finances, community and sustainability: eat more real, whole food — from a farmers’ market, a community garden or your own yard. Figure out what percentage of your grocery bill comes from or could come from Missouri and increase the amount every month. Take a cooking class; add a new farm-to-table restaurant to your go-to list; if you still eat meat, add more veg; if you garden, build a greenhouse to extend the season or move into permaculture and edible perennials. Every bite you consume is an essential gift from the earth that formed you. Let a gut-deep awareness and appreciation of the miracle made from soil and sunlight be your daily grace.

Get A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Did you know we spend 1/3 of our life in bed? $20 Billion: The annual revenue of the U.S. weight-loss industry, including diet books, diet drugs and weight-loss surgeries. 1 Hour: The amount of time spent on daily exercise by people who lost and kept off at least 30 pounds of excess weight for five years. Live a Little Greener
Many of us aim to reduce our waistlines in the New Year – why not work to reduce our carbon footprints and support Missouri, too? Add a second “trash” can in your home for recyclables. Toss in metal cans, glass bottles and plastic containers. Keep the lids on and no need to rinse! Recycle cardboard and paper but not foodservice paper, like cups and plates, they contaminate the paper pulp process. Keep out plastic bags and Styrofoam, huge contaminates of single-stream recycling facilities. Avoid them when you can. Recycle plastic bags separately at your local grocery store. Put resources back into our local economy through recycling. Recycling creates jobs, reduces pollution and saves energy. Small efforts like these can make a big local impact!

Small changes: Drop A Brick!
Here is one tip that can literally save a ton of water. Simply placing a brick (or two) in the top tank of your toilet will significantly reduce the amount of water used every time you flush the toilet. All you’ll need to do is obtain a clean brick (they cost less than fifty cents at most hardware stores), carefully open the lid on the back tank of the toilet, and place the brick in the corner or somewhere safe in the tank. Just be sure you’re not obstructing anything from working inside the tank. Put the lid back on the tank and your one small change is done!

Grow Your Own Flowers!
Why buy cut flowers when you can easily grow an almost endless supply yourself? Inca Jolie Peruvian Lily, Alstroemeria, begins blooming in late spring to early summer, producing arm loads of cut flowers well into fall. Its vibrant orange-red flowers intricately marked with splashes of gold and dark streaks in their centers enliven gardens, containers and vases for months. An extremely vigorous and robust variety, Inca Jolie Alstroemeria forms thick mounds of lush foliage. Unlike other Alstromerias that are not winter hardy, Inca Jolie is a hardy perennial that will delightfully return year after year.

See The Forest and The Trees
A “treemendous” year starts with getting outdoors and enjoying the wealth of benefits trees provide. Trees work for our well-being as much as they work for wildlife and the environment. Studies show that people who spend time around trees concentrate better. Contact with nature helps children improve their creativity, intellectual development and social relationships. Whether it’s a walk in the park, playtime in the backyard, or a hike through the woods, get outdoors and see how trees work for you and your family. Discover all the ways trees and forests are working for you at treeswork.org. From the Trees Work program at the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Make a Vision Board
A Vision Board is a visual representation of what you want to achieve. It works by shifting the energy you are sending out around your intentions. To make the board, you will need a poster board, pictures and glue. Go through magazines and pull lots of pictures. Select the ones you intuitively want and lay them on the board, then glue them on. Some people hang their boards, so they can see them often; others put them away and pull them out a year later to see what manifested. The intentions on the board are strong; this is a great way to manifest change.

Shoveling Snow
The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a lot of snow this winter! While pristine and beautiful, it can be a pain… Literally! Following a few simple guidelines can prevent shoveling snow from becoming a trip to the ER.

  1. don’t overload the shovel – especially with very wet snow.
  2. toss the snow forward. Don’t twist to throw the snow behind you.
  3. bend your knees!
  4. move your feet! Planting your feet means you were doing all the work with your back!
  5. take frequent breaks. And if you don’t succeed and steps one through four, COME SEE US!

Meditative Card Reading
Start your day with a 10 minute card reading meditation to get yourself centered and connected to your own positive energy. Many people think divination tools are for fortune telling, but as expert Paul O’Brien reveals, divination tools are about tapping into one’s own psyche and spiritual journey. As a result, a daily meditation with a single card or small card layout from a divination deck is the ideal way to start one’s day. Choose a deck that you personally resonate with, perhaps one that offers daily positive affirmations or one tailored to working with a current focus of yours. After clearing the deck of any previous energy left from earlier readings, focus and ask your higher power what it is that you should focus on today. Pull out a single card, study it, and read the deck’s guide for more insight. Carry the card with you throughout the day and reflect on its message and your day’s unfolding.

It’s Time for Cleansing!
The New Year is a great time to take stock of that which doesn’t serve you. Consider cleansing all levels of your life. Simplify by removing the “things” in your life that you no longer use. Give them to someone who needs them. Simplifying is freeing.
Take stock of unhealthy relationships that aren’t supportive or drain your energy. Look at your habits and routines. Are you balanced? Make relaxation and stress reduction part of your daily life. Consider deep breathing, qi gong, meditation or yoga. Clean up your diet by removing processed foods and sugars. Detoxify unhealthy toxins.
I wish you the best of health!

Visualize What You Want
My 82 year old mother has always looked and acted younger than her years. Her secret? She never focuses on what she doesn’t want. Instead, she reframes her thinking with visualization which trains her subconscious mind, rewiring it for positivity and success. Seek out what you do want and the results will be peace and positivity. Through the tools I can give you with self-hypnosis or by a session of hypnosis for rewiring your negative thoughts, I can help you reach your goals. I help ordinary, everyday people solve ordinary, everyday problems. Believe you can and you will. Our inner peace starts with how we view our world. Make Time for Your Pets
Spending extra quality time with your pets after the anxiety of the holidays is very beneficial and can strengthen the human-animal bond. First make an appointment with your pet. A play date so to speak. Mark it on the calendar and don’t schedule anything else during that time. Second play interactive games with your pet. When engaging your pets mind, it makes you more interesting to them and will make them look at you for entertainment instead of perhaps a destructive alternative. This is relaxing for both you and your pet. Finally, spend time actually observing your pet. Really enjoy the essence of your pet. Concentrate on their feel, their sounds, their rhythm, their scent. You will be surprised what you see!

Set Up A Food Log
Many of my clients use a food log , Fitness Pal or some other method of tracking their actual activity. Some clients discover that just parking farther from the door, taking the steps instead of the elevator and walking at their breaks allows them to burn the necessary calories to reduce weight. Others discover that using a smaller plate, splitting the meal at a restaurant and eating slowly can result in several pounds of weight loss.
