America Recycles Day November 15

America Recycles Day

Small Actions, Lasting Impact

Every year on November 15, America Recycles Day encourages us to think about the waste we create and the small steps we can take to protect our environment. As the holiday season approaches, it is a timely reminder that celebrating with family and friends can go hand in hand with making thoughtful choices for our planet.

From holiday shopping bags and shipping boxes to food containers and gift wrap, the amount of waste we generate can increase during the final weeks of the year. The good news is that reducing waste does not have to be complicated. Small changes in our everyday routines can make a difference.

Start by recycling right. Check your local recycling guidelines to learn which materials are accepted in your community. Rules can vary, and placing the wrong items in a recycling bin can contaminate an otherwise recyclable load. Make sure containers are empty and follow local instructions about whether they need to be rinsed or sorted. When in doubt, check before tossing it in.

Give everyday items a second life. Reuse gift bags, ribbons, boxes, and packing materials whenever possible. Consider giving experiences, homemade gifts, or items with less packaging. Before buying something new, think about whether an item you already own can serve the same purpose.

Reduce food waste. Holiday meals often leave us with plenty of leftovers. Plan portions thoughtfully, store food safely, and get creative with what remains. Composting eligible food scraps can also help keep organic material out of landfills when a suitable program is available.

Look beyond the recycling bin. Donating usable clothing and household goods, repairing items instead of replacing them, and choosing durable products can all help conserve resources. Reducing what we use in the first place is just as important as recycling what we can.

America Recycles Day is a reminder that caring for the environment is not limited to one day or one big action. It is built through everyday choices made at home, at work, and throughout our community.

This holiday season, consider choosing one new habit to carry forward. When many people make small, thoughtful changes, those actions can add up to a healthier community and a healthier planet.
