The Courage to Be Authentic

Dr. Gail Cloud

By Dr. Gail Cloud

One of the most important things we can do for ourselves is to be truly us and to be authentic and honest. That is a huge task and requires self- reflection and the courage and discipline to see ourselves clearly.

Here is a personal example. I have had a weak left calf muscle as I had torn one of the calf muscles years ago and it healed, but with scar tissue. Through dancing again, I have recently irritated that area in my calf. I am working on it, and I also know it is time to tread carefully with it so that it can continue its healing process rather than get re-injured. Here is my issue. I badly want to go to ballet class tonight. If I look at myself honestly, I know that it is not a wise decision. Another option is to give myself a slow and careful class at home or to go to class and tell my teacher of my issue and be very mindful of my injury. I also know that the second option, while it sounds good, is not the best one at this time as I would be tempted to do too much.

Here is what is up for me. In needing my father growing up, I was always afraid I would miss something if I didn’t go with him to do things. And I wouldn’t please him. In missing ballet class I am afraid I would miss out and that I wouldn’t please my instructor whom I want to please.

The most honest issue in front of me is to confront my fears; take courage, and to please myself and my body’s needs first.

That is being in integrity with myself. This takes introspection and the willingness to let go of something that is not in my best interest.

So, being present and having integrity with myself is crucial. And it is for all of us. What things come up for you and take courage for you to address?
