Chronic Fatigue – A Functional Medicine Perspective

Dr Amy Davis

By Dr. Amy Davis M.D.

Chronic fatigue is more than just feeling tired. It’s a persistent, often debilitating condition that can affect every aspect of daily life. At Crossing Back to Health, chronic fatigue is not a diagnosis, but a signal that deeper imbalances exist within the body. Functional medicine focuses on identifying and correcting these root causes rather than masking symptoms.

One commonly overlooked contributor to chronic fatigue is viral burden, particularly from latent infections such as Epstein-Barr virus (often referred to as “mono”). After the initial infection, viruses like Epstein-Barr can remain dormant in the body and reactivate during periods of stress or immune dysfunction. This reactivation can trigger immune system strain, inflammation, and profound, lingering fatigue. Other viral infections may also contribute to a chronic immune response that drains energy over time. Understanding how to support your individual immune system can be very helpful in eliminating symptoms of fatigue even when the initial infection may have occurred years before.

In addition to viral burden, mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role. Mitochondria are the “energy factories” of our cells, and when they are impaired due to nutrient deficiencies, toxins, or chronic stress, the body cannot produce adequate energy. Hormonal imbalances, particularly involving the thyroid and adrenal glands, are also key drivers. Low thyroid function or adrenal dysregulation can leave patients feeling constantly exhausted, even after adequate rest.

Inflammation is another major factor. Chronic, low-grade inflammation often triggered by poor diet, food sensitivities, infections, or gut dysfunction can interfere with energy production and disrupt normal physiological processes. Dr. Davis emphasizes the importance of gut health, noting that imbalances in the microbiome can impair nutrient absorption and contribute to systemic inflammation.

Environmental toxins further compound fatigue. Exposure to mold, heavy metals, and chemicals can overwhelm detoxification pathways and impair cellular function. Sleep quality is equally important; disrupted or non-restorative sleep can prevent the body from repairing and recharging effectively. Proper support of detoxification pathways is very helpful.

Chronic fatigue is real and impacts many people. Resolving chronic fatigue requires a personalized, comprehensive approach. Functional medicine uses advanced testing to uncover hidden contributors such as viral reactivation, nutrient deficiencies, and toxic load, followed by targeted interventions including nutritional support, immune system regulation, detoxification, and lifestyle optimization.
