“My Labs are Normal. Why Do I Still Feel So Bad???”

Dr Amy Davis

By Dr. Amy Davis, M.D.

Many patients arrive at my office feeling frustrated and confused. They’ve done the responsible thing—they visited their doctor, had blood tests, and were told, “Everything looks normal.” Yet they still struggle with symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Digestive issues
  • Sleep problems
  • Headaches
  • Chronic aches

“Normal” Doesn’t Always Mean “Optimal”

From a functional medicine perspective, “normal” does not always mean “optimal.” Standard lab ranges are designed to detect disease, not necessarily early dysfunction. This means your results may fall within a broad population range even while your body is signaling that something isn’t working as well as it should. Furthermore, many helpful labs may not be ordered by your physician.

Looking for the Root Cause

Functional medicine looks deeper by asking a different question: Why are the symptoms happening in the first place?

For example, symptoms may be connected to:

  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Blood sugar instability
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Changes in the gut microbiome
  • Food sensitivities or allergies
  • Poor sleep or chronic stress
  • Environmental allergies
  • Immune weakness
  • Biochemical individuality

Symptoms Are Often Early Warning Signs

Another important concept is that symptoms often appear long before disease is measurable on standard lab tests. Think of symptoms as the body’s early warning system. When we listen to those signals and investigate further, we may uncover patterns that conventional screening tests overlook.

The Functional Medicine Approach

In functional medicine, we also explore lifestyle factors that strongly influence health, including:

  • Nutrition
  • Sleep quality
  • Movement and exercise
  • Stress levels
  • Environmental exposures
  • Gut health

Small imbalances across several areas can accumulate and significantly affect how you feel—even when basic lab tests appear normal.

Your Symptoms Matter

Most importantly, your symptoms are real and deserve attention. Feeling unwell is not something you should simply “push through” because a lab report says you’re within reference range.

If you’ve been told your labs are normal but you still don’t feel like yourself, it may be time to take a deeper look. Functional medicine aims to uncover the root causes of symptoms and help restore balance so your body can function the way it was designed to. You deserve more than “normal.” You deserve to feel well.
