Simple Joys in Winter

By Susan Hunt-Bradford

So far, winter in St. Louis has been fairly kind to us. I’m writing this in the middle of January, hoping I haven’t just jinxed things by saying that out loud. A few unexpectedly warm days sprinkled through December and January have been enough to lift my spirits and remind me that spring isn’t really all that far away.

Once those hopeful spring thoughts begin, they tend to drift naturally into summer thoughts—and then, of course, vacation thoughts. There probably won’t be a big vacation for me again this year, but that’s perfectly fine. I’ve reached an age where it doesn’t take much to make me happy. A short trip here or there, a change of scenery, and a little time to slow down are more than enough. Luckily, Missouri and Illinois offer so many wonderful options for easy, affordable getaways.

I often find myself marveling at the beautiful trees all around us, something I never take for granted. When I was young and living in the Adirondacks of northern New York, my parents, sister, and I would pile into the car with a picnic lunch and simply drive until we found a spot with a picnic table. We’d stop, eat together, and enjoy being outdoors. It’s one of those simple family memories that has stayed with me over the years. No elaborate plans, no big expenses, just time together. Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones that matter most.

February brings its own share of fun and meaningful experiences in the St. Louis area. Local favorites include Eagle Days in West Alton on February 7, a Beekeeping Workshop on February 20–21, and wintertime adventures like chasing waterfalls in Shawnee Forest Country in Southern Illinois. Of course, there’s also the excitement of the Super Bowl and the sweetness of Valentine’s Day. In this issue, we’re sharing healthy snack ideas to help you celebrate both occasions without sacrificing your well-being.

Mardi Gras festivities continue throughout February in St. Louis and Soulard, including the always-popular Purina Pet Parade on February 8. And as always, our ARTful Living column highlights the many creative and cultural events happening throughout the region.

Even in the coldest months, there’s no shortage of interesting, uplifting things to do in Missouri and Illinois. Sometimes all it takes is a little curiosity — and a willingness to embrace what’s right outside our door.
