Recycling 101: Recycling Resolutions

By Steve Davies,

Now my question here is what exactly would a recycling resolution be? I mean, first off, I know I already do a fair amount of recycling, like cutting out the greasy parts of a pizza box before putting them in the recycling bin and I also separate the layers of biscuit packaging and other cardboard containers, just to recycle the cardboard underneath and the metal ends, be it at home, at work or even on vacation.

On top of that, I try to buy what I can used, such as clothes and the picture frames I use for my photography from one of our local second-hand stores. I also try to buy things when containers they’re in are metal, glass or paper instead of plastic when given the chance, wherever I go shopping.

So, all of this leads me to still be asking the question, what would be a recycling resolution? Maybe it’s just as simple as helping others to do what they can when it comes to making a difference. Teaching people how to do what I do so that they can be the best at recycling what they have.

If I look no further than at home like I’ve said before, my oldest is not only picking up trash when we go out anywhere, be it walking in a parking lot or when he’s in the store. My youngest son is so into native trees now that we’ve planted around half a dozen trees here in our yard that maybe I do now know what my recycling resolution is.

Helping others learn to find what motivates them to recycle more, be it by using reusable bags when they’re out shopping at the store, purchasing items that come in metal, glass or paper instead of plastic while even shopping at second hand stores from time to time.

What I can do here I think is to also help provide more resources such as where to recycle the tougher items like electronics or scrap metal, making it easier to recycle. That said, Happy New Year! Here’s hoping I can fulfill those recycling resolutions this year.
