Missouri Green Schools (MGS) announced its 2025 honorees, recognizing 33 schools across Missouri for their commitment to improving the health and wellness of students and staff, lowering their environmental impact, and providing place-based education.
MGS is a state level recognition and support program co-managed by the Missouri Gateway Green Building Council and the Missouri Environmental Education Association. MGS annually recognizes schools infusing sustainability into their academic programming, organizational culture, and physical building & grounds.
Hanna Woods Elementary in the Parkway School District serves as an example of an MGS school taking on sustainability initiatives. Staff supported student leadership in their green projects this year when their Student Council identified a recycling concern: “Students saw the need for building recycling bins to be sorted more carefully to ensure that our school is recycling items properly and to support our janitorial staff. Every week, groups of students go through the school sorting and disposing of items thoroughly. When students intentionally observe the needs around them to keep things healthy, they become good stewards in life. With this small action of taking responsibility for recycling, they become aware of trash and items in the creek by the school, and on the grounds, and are also assisting students in the cafeteria to dispose of their trash wisely.”
Missouri Green Schools will continue to support these schools as they track achievements, set new goals, and strive to make a difference in the lives of their students and staff and in their communities.
