The labels we wear whether given to us by others, or ones that we have claimed ourselves can shape the way we navigate through the world. Labels influence our self-worth, our relationships, and the choices we make. Some labels empower us and others trap us in outdated versions of ourselves, so it is essential to ask ourselves: What labels am I still carrying that no longer reflect who I am?
Perhaps you have labeled yourself as “traumatized” or “broken” after going through a traumatic event. These labels may have felt true in the moment, even validating to an extent, but what happens when we begin to build our identity around these traumatic events and limiting labels?
It is not about denying what we have been through such as trauma, heartbreak, and loss. These events shape us, but they do not have to define us. We can acknowledge our past without being cemented in it. We can move from “victimized” to resilient, from “helpless” to capable, from “damaged” to healed.
Now the question becomes what if we started choosing labels that reflect the people we are becoming? Words like resilient, courageous, open-hearted, wise, hopeful, or brave. When we choose to see ourselves through a different set of lenses that empower us, we start acting in alignment with them. Then we begin to respond with more kindness, explore with more wonder, and show up with more courage.
Furthermore, we should also consider which labels we are ready to release such as “broken,” “helpless,” or “disfunctional.” Shedding these labels does not mean rejecting your past rather it means rewriting your story on your own terms.
You are not a fixed identity since you are constantly evolving. You get to decide which labels stay and which ones fade away. Choose the ones that empower you, that propel you forward, and that highlight your inner light.
