There’s Something Special About September

By Susan Hunt-Bradford

There’s just something about September that fills me with a deep sense of happiness. Maybe it’s the promise of cooler days on the horizon, the store shelves brimming with cozy fall décor, or the treasured memories of growing up in the Adirondacks—where the first blush of autumn paints the mountains in rich, watercolor hues. Whatever the reason, September brings with it a calm, peaceful joy that feels like home.

In the Adirondacks of northern New York, I learned that every season holds its own beauty when you step into nature—whether for adventure, relaxation, or cherished time with family, friends, and pets. But for me, nothing compares to the breathtaking fall colors of those mountains. Even now, just recalling them brings a wave of serenity unlike anything else.

Here in St. Louis, September has its own unique magic. Our farmers markets overflow with fresh, seasonal bounty—crisp apples, hearty squash, fragrant herbs—alongside locally crafted goods. For a full guide to markets in Illinois, Missouri, and beyond, visit nfmd.org and plan your weekend wanderings.

This issue of The Healthy Planet is your guide to making the most of September. ARTful Living spotlights inspiring upcoming art events. Southern Illinois offers endless possibilities for a scenic road trip. The weekends are packed with lively fall festivals, and a visit to a local winery is always in season. Be sure to check out the Midwest Holistic Wellness Fair on September 13, Convergence Wellness Campout Sept 18-21, The Koi Show & Pond Expo Sept 19-21, Rescheduled Paw Paw Fest on Sept 20, Mississippi Earth Tones Festival on Sept 20 and the Internal Spirit Holistic Fair in Bridgeton Sept 26–27.

As families settle into the school routine, this is also the perfect time to focus on your health before winter keeps us indoors. In every issue, The Healthy Planet features expert advice from healthcare professionals to help you stay strong, vibrant, and well-informed.

Don’t forget your gardens, September is prime time for planting and preparing for the colder months. Sugar Creek Gardens in Kirkwood can help you choose the right flowers, shrubs, and trees to brighten your landscape well into fall.

So, embrace the changing season. Savor the sights, the flavors, and the experiences that make this month so special. I plan to soak up every moment of September’s beauty as we make the gentle shift from summer’s warmth to autumn’s embrace.
