As kids head back to school, the transition from summer break to a structured routine can be exciting but challenging. One of the biggest obstacles for many students is staying focused in class and managing distractions—particularly those related to screen time. With more learning happening online and kids’ access to smartphones, tablets, and gaming devices, it’s important to balance screen time to help boost attention and improve school performance. Here are some strategies to help kids succeed.
1. Establish a Consistent Routine
A predictable daily routine is crucial for improving focus. Having set wake-up and bedtimes helps kids regulate their internal clocks, ensuring they get enough sleep to feel rested and ready for school. Avoid screen time within an hour of bedtime and don’t allow TV’s in their rooms. A solid morning routine also sets the tone for the day.
2. Manage Screen Time Wisely
Too much screen time can hurt kids’ attention span and contribute to feelings of restlessness. While some screen time is beneficial—especially for online learning and educational apps—it’s important to set limits. Experts recommend that kids aged 6 to 18 spend no more than two hours per day on recreational screen activities, like gaming or watching TV. Parents can help by setting clear boundaries for screen time before and after school and only after homework is complete.
4. Create a Distraction-Free Study Environment
To minimize distractions, create a designated study area at home that is free of screens and other temptations. For older kids who might be more attached to their devices, you can use apps that limit screen time or block certain websites during study hours.
5. Encourage Physical Activity and Movement
Physical movement has been shown to enhance concentration and cognitive function. A burst of activity can refresh their brain, improve blood flow, and help them refocus on schoolwork.
6. Prioritize Healthy Habits
Good nutrition and exercise are essential for brain health and maintaining focus throughout the school day. A healthy breakfast that includes protein and fiber, like eggs and whole grains, can provide lasting energy. Encourage your child to eat well-balanced meals and stay active.
7. Use Technology for Good
Technology can also be a helpful tool for staying organized. Encourage your child to use apps that promote productivity, such as digital planners, to-do lists, or educational games that boost learning in fun ways. Using screens for positive purposes can help kids have healthier relationships with technology.
