August: The Unofficial End of Summer?
By Susan Hunt-Bradford
When I think of August, one phrase comes to mind—“back to school!” It’s a time filled with excitement and a sense of new beginnings. For students, it’s a fresh chapter. For teachers, a return to their calling. And for parents, it’s a chance to witness their children continue to grow and learn. There’s something positive in it for everyone.
I’ve always loved the back-to-school season. As a child, my mom made it a special event—taking my sister and me shopping for clothes, shoes, and supplies at places like Sears, Woolworth’s, and Montgomery Ward. We’d even go out to lunch, which was a big deal since eating out was a rare treat in our family. Even now, decades later, those memories bring a smile to my face.
I carried on the tradition with my son, John. Every year, we’d make our own back-to-school shopping trip, though I must say his supply lists were far more elaborate. I’ll never forget the year he needed a “special” calculator that cost more than everything on my old lists combined! And while his lunchboxes were made of plastic or fabric, I still remember my metal Snoopy lunchbox from the ’60s, complete with a matching thermos. That lunchbox went everywhere with me.
One of the greatest blessings of being a college professor was having summers off. I spent countless sunny days at the neighborhood pool with John. We’d pack snacks, towels, and pool toys and just enjoy the simplicity of being together. It reminded me of my own childhood summers spent with my stay-at-home mom—carefree, joyful, and full of discovery.
Of course, August can also feel like the end of summer fun—vacations winding down, schedules filling up, and pool days growing shorter. But it doesn’t have to be. There’s still time to soak up the season and make a few more memories.
Take advantage of what’s nearby. Missouri and Illinois are home to many quick, affordable getaways that feel like a real vacation. Southern Illinois in particular, with its scenic beauty, small towns, and welcoming spirit, holds a special place in my heart. As a proud graduate of SIU Carbondale, I love visiting and discovering what’s new—and what’s stayed just the same.
Here’s to holding onto summer just a little longer.
