Recycling 101: City of Chesterfield Recycling

By Steve Davies, Healthy Planet Columnist

Last week I received a question on The Healthy Planet Facebook page regarding the city of Chesterfield and their current sanitation program. It seems that someone heard from one of their neighbors that while the city offers everyone two bins, one for the trash and one for recycling, it was unclear to their neighbor where the recycling actually goes to. I wanted to delve into this to see what I can find out.

So, my first step was to go over to the City of Chesterfield’s website to look into their sanitation program and see who is in charge. Well, it turns out that it’s Republic Services. When I saw that, I thought that that’s the same company working with the City of Kirkwood where I live so I decided to go over to their website just to double check that.

Well, that’s where it began to get interesting. On the City of Chesterfield’s website, I was able to track down Republic Services, the company in charge of their sanitation within two clicks. On the City of Kirkwood’s website however, I tried to see what company is in charge with no luck at all.

The only reason that I knew who Kirkwood worked with was because of some research I did a while back when I had a question regarding their recycling program and what they take. I eventually ended up getting in contact with someone in the city who told me it was Republic Services.

Now what made this even more interesting was that when I tried to log-in to my Republic Services account, I got the message that online services weren’t available for my address at the moment. This made me wonder if Republic Services is still working with the city.

That said, I guess tomorrow I’ll also try to get in touch with the City of Kirkwood to see if they are still working with them. Meanwhile I’m still waiting to hear back from Republic Services to see if what the neighbor said is true regarding the City of Chesterfield. So stay tuned as I do a bit more research into this topic.
