Organized for Life: Prepping for Summer!

By Deb Powell, Healthy Planet Columnist

Getting organized now for the summer leaves you more time to enjoy it.

Want to be organized and get more done? Make a list! Set a timer for 30 -60 minutes! Then stop and do the next task or get up and move/stretch if you’ve been sitting…

OR: Write on a time table what you want to get done for the day/week/month…

I can’t promise this will work, but it should if you follow it. I say this because funny enough, one summer we had a list of things we were going to do and we did NONE of them…. We got so busy and distracted with life and doing other things that we ran out of time for the list, but we did have a good summer!

June is a good time to organize/clean the garage or shed, outside toys or furniture, gardening supplies… Take the unused items to a thrift store, or sell them, and be sure to take the broken things to the dump. When you can’t decide if you should get rid of certain items, set a date, and if you haven’t used them by then, let them go.

Beware, now that we’ve realized how much consumerism has taken over our minds and lives we know we don’t need thousands of items to be happy. Besides, most things only give us temporary joy. Clear our minds and our lives of useless, time and money-wasting items, keep life simple and spend our time enjoying it. Want to save money too? Don’t buy it! You just saved 100%! Ka-ching!

This is the best time for outside jobs… touching up paint, fixing exterior issues, cleaning eaves and the outside of windows. Outdoors is the best place to do a thorough cleaning of things like vacuum cleaners, beating small rugs, and anything that would be better not done indoors.

June is also a great time to restock first aid kits, clean out vehicles, plan summer routines, set goals, make appointments, create summer menus, shop local, try new foods, and start eating healthier meals. Plus, taking day trips or traveling while the weather’s nice just makes the summer more enjoyable.

When the kids are finished their school year it’s a good time to go through their supplies and make a list of what they’ll need for next year. Keep it in their knapsack, lunch bag, at the central station, or where else – on the fridge!

Enjoy the summer by entertaining more, learning something new, relaxing, and/or traveling. Life is too short to be bogged down with ‘too much stuff’.

Let’s do what really makes us happy, and build relationships. People are what matter!
