The Comfort Food Cure

Celebrating the Wisdom of our Culinary Traditions

By Greg Kiger

Well for starters, you wouldn’t have to watch CNN to know if eggs were good or bad. You wouldn’t have to count calories, go hungry or consume “health foods” that taste like cardboard. You wouldn’t need to wait for a hospital, drug company or government agency to come to your rescue. What if how to being healthy, happy and well fed had already been worked out for you long ago and it was simply a matter of remembering?

Today we find ourselves in the midst of an epidemic of disease – obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer, the list goes on. Our children are suffering too, in unprecedented numbers. Salvation is near, all we need to do is tune out Food Inc and their Madison ave pitchmen for just a few minutes and instead tap into our shared culinary traditions, ones fully supported by today’s best nutritional science.

It turns out your great great grandmother was right, about eating your veggies and so much more. She ate eggs, from pastured chickens. Her beef was grass fed. Her brussel sprouts, bell peppers and bright red apples – they were heirloom, organic and oh so fresh. Her fruit pies were tasty and loaded with phytonutrients. The whip cream on top, fresh from the family cow. She canned vegetables and naturally fermented cabbage slaw, she made yogurt too – all bursting with pre and probiotics. She made her meals hearty wholesome, comfort food that kept the family well and coming back for more.

No need to move back to the farm though, no need for a PHD in nutrition science either. An exciting food renaissance is gaining steam in America today. With just a little effort and a quick refresher course – we can all eat well and be healthy.

Make a plan; maybe plant a small garden this spring. Make the farmers market an every saturday thing. Order wild caught salmon, artisan cheese and fresh nuts straight from the producer. Set aside just 2 hours each sunday and cook up a storm, one that will power the family through the week ahead. Every step in the right direction is a win. Comfort food that offers up flavor, satisfaction and optimal nutrition. Love, laughter and connection – all sacred traditions that you can serve up for dinner. A toast to your good health, may you savor every last bite.
