Compounding: Practicing the True Art of Pharmacy to Meet Individualized Patient Needs

By Jon P. Frieda, MBA

The compounding of medications by pharmacists is a long standing and traditional part of pharmacy practice. Compounding is the art of mixing one or more active pharmaceutical ingredients to fill a physician’s prescription order. The compounding pharmacists and technicians at Neels Pharmacy work with clients and physicians in Missouri and Illinois to formulate individualized formulations in order to achieve positive therapeutic outcomes.

Since every patient has unique needs, compounding allows the pharmacist and physician to go beyond the one size fits all framework of commercially available medications, especially if commercially available options do not succeed in providing positive therapeutic outcomes. In short, with a physician’s prescription order, Neels Pharmacy can change the strength of a medication, alter its dosage form and add flavoring to make a medication more palatable.

Neels Pharmacy can prepare compounded medications using a variety of unique delivery systems, such as a sublingual troche to be dissolved under the tongue, or a transdermal gel or cream to be applied topically to allow the drug to absorb through the dermal layer. Or, for those who are having a difficult time swallowing a tablet or capsule, we can compound a liquid oral suspension, chewable treat or lollipop instead.

Neels Pharmacy’s compounded formulation capabilities include Autism/ADD/ADHA, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement, Colorectal and Proctological, Dental and Dermatological, Ear-Nose-Throat, Pain Management, Fungal-Parasite-Pathogenic Bacteria and Heavy Metal Detox, Veterinary, and more.
