Vet-Pet Rescue (VPR) is a volunteer, foster-based non-for profit (501c3), all breed rescue & adoption organization. We are located in Chesterfield MO, as a legal limited liability corporation in the State of Missouri, that was created by Dr. Douglas Pernikoff. We are dedicated to helping all types of animals from euthanasia or other harmful scenarios. Our intent is to place them into loving, forever homes. We take animals from different shelters across Missouri that need help due to lack of space or the particular program’s inability to adopt the animal. We also take in owner surrenders as space permits. Our focus is on dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, but we regularly take in reptiles, small mammals, and birds to find them homes as well.
Vet-Pet Rescue adoption fees for dogs and cats includes a spay/neuter surgery, micro-chipping, vaccines appropriate for their estimated age & deworming. All animals will have a fecal sample check for parasites, provided heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention. If over 6 months old dogs will be heartworm tested and puppies under the age of 6 months are parvo-virus tested, and all cats are feline leukemia/FIV tested. We also treat the animals for any medical issues they have when entering our program and provide grooming if needed. We hold all of our animals for 7 to 10 days before allowing them to be adopted to new homes. This allows us time to monitor for common illnesses, and to learn something about their personalities. Our Rescue coordinator and volunteers do their best to learn everything they can about each animal taken into our rescue. These actions help us to provide our new pet owners with information about their new pet’s behaviors as well as to assure that we are working to provide healthy pets for them.
One common reason for animals to end up in a shelter is that they are found running free as strays and are not reclaimed by their original owners while held in shelters. Over 7 million pet dogs and cats are killed at shelters nationwide each year. In some cases, a family is moving and cannot take the animal with them. Rather than work to find a best option, the owner will simply release them outside to survive as they can. Some animals may be killed by cars, or by other feral animals. Our goal is to help these animals find their second chance at life through adoptions from our VET PET RESCUE into wonderful new pet homes.
