New Year Tips

Be accountable to a workout group
A very common new year’s resolution is to lose weight or to start exercising again. Make life easier on yourself by tackling this resolution with a friend or a workout group. Chiropractic Wellness Center starts new workout and weight loss challenge groups almost monthly. These groups keep each other accountable through facebook and are open to the public. We primarily use the Beach Body programs since they can be tailored to fit most body types and can easily be done from the comfort of your own home.

Make a vision board
A Vision Board is a visual representation of what you want to achieve. It works by shifting the energy you are sending out around your intentions. To make the board, you will need a poster board, pictures and glue. Go through magazines and pull lots of pictures. Select the ones you intuitively want and lay them on the board, then glue them on. Some people hang their boards, so they can see them often; others put them away and pull them out a year later to see what manifested. The intentions on the board are strong; this is a great way to manifest change.

Tips for a Pets Body, Mind and Soul
Nurture the body. Feed grain free diets and less processed (dry) foods. Look to dehydrated formulas, especially for allergies. Vary the type of proteins offered so all amino acids are available. Research shows that 94% of dogs are calcium and magnesium deficient and 97% have inflammation, needing zinc to resolve symptoms. Adding these minerals can be beneficial for weak ligaments, mental nervousness or excitability. A gentle stretching ear massage can go a long way to calm the “beast” within. Slow traction starting at the head moving out to ear tips.

Focusing on Positive Goals for the New Year
Well, its that time of year again when people all over the world start setting their new years resolutions. And, that’s always a good thing! By far, the most popular of all resolutions is losing weight and getting healthy. In 2015, Focus on Positive Goals with your diet, rather than deprivation. All too many people focus on “I’m not eating this”, “I’m giving up that”, “No more of this”, etc. when they start changing their dietary habits. Instead, focus your dietary goals around eating more of what your body needs: Lots of Lean proteins, Fruits, Vegetables, and Water! Focus on getting good stuff in, not so much on “keeping the bad stuff out.”

Learn to relax and improve your moods with essential oils.
Essential oils are very powerful and can be used with wonderful results. Aromatherapy can change your mood, lift your spirits or totally relax you. Depending on the type of stress you are experiencing, you may want to try one of the following blends: For tension, lavender and orange are good choices. For anxiety, you may want to try cedar and ylang-ylang. For irritability or anger, try bergamot and chamomile. For relaxation or sleeplessness, lavender is the best. There are a variety of ways to use the oils, either by diffusing, in a bath, a sachet or just simply sniffing. With the exception of lavender oil, never put these oils directly on your skin without diluting in a carrier oil.

Successful resolutions
Why is it hard for most of us to maintain our new- year resolutions? Most resolutions require us to make lifestyle changes – and this requires effort. Last week I saw a movie called AWAKE. It was based on an autobiographical life of a yogi. I was impressed when he said,” To make any change, we have to exercise willpower.” To exercise willpower, one simple strategy is to start your goal slowly and gradually, increase as you experience consistency with adherence to your plan. Your will and determination are absolutely necessary in order to succeed – so choose your resolutions wisely.

We need synergy, cooperation and empathy
Let’s consider the most prevalent and debilitating disease in St. Louis. It is most often an under or undiagnosed condition which when untreated, is left to grow like cancer. There are no specific labs nor advanced radiological modalities to order. There is no known surgical procedure that cures. It is often diagnosed empirically; by observing symptomatic behavior, or by getting a good history on the patient. This disease is RACISM. There is no way to heal this city through perpetual denial. It is here. It lives here. Well what can we do about it? What happens to our ailing heartland depends on all of us. We need all of our vital organs working together. We need synergy, cooperation and empathy for each other. Please take notice that the ENTIRE world is watching what is happening here in St. Louis.

Happiness is a choice
Life is so much finer if you choose to focus on the happy! Feeling blue? Do something that makes you feel good! Here are some of my favorite happy things to do: see movies, stroll through one of St. Louis’ awesome parks, eat healthy and delicious food, ride my bike, break bread with uplifting friends – surround yourself with these kinds of folks and you will see a positive difference!, spend quality time with my dog, browse through antique malls enjoying the beauty and craftsmanship of things past, enjoy “zen” time – for me it’s curled up on the couch with the newspaper and coffee, replace negative thoughts with ones that make you happy… What are your favorite things to do?

Heal with Clean Filtered Water
We are exposed to toxins in our air, food, and water every day. Make sure to drink only pure, filtered water to flush toxins away. Depending on your weight, drink 75-150 ounces of water per day. Also, use the power of clean filtered water to help you detoxify through colon hydrotherapy. The process is comfortable, with warm water used at very gentle pressure for 40 minutes. Client draping protects privacy. The procedure also helps with IBS, constipation, parasites, and more.

Switch to all-natural body care products
Think baby steps as you work to replace your personal care routine with more natural skincare and body products. Sometimes one is overwhelmed with the thought of throwing out all of one’s toiletries and replacing everything with more natural products. Instead of taking on such an overwhelming task, think in terms of one body area at a time. Maybe you can start with your shower soap or wash, and replace it with a natural castile (olive oil) base bath bar. Once you’ve gotten comfortable with that change, move on to a natural product body scrub or a talc free body powder. If you think in terms of one thing at a time, you’re more likely to make the change and feel better about your New Year’s resolution to go all natural!

Get back on the healthy eating track
The holidays are over and we all probably indulged in way too many scrumptious sweets and treats. To get back on track with your healthy eating habits, keep things simple and aim to fill at least half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, a quarter with a lean protein (think grilled salmon or beans), and a quarter with whole grains (brown rice or barley are excellent, fiber-filled options). A glass of skim milk or a serving of reduced-fat cheese completes this meal. Following MyPlate when preparing your meals ensures that you are getting the proper portions of all of the five food groups.”

Intentional meals
Honor your meals and the digestion process. It’s common to snack all day, never enjoying proper meals. Instead, plan for mindful meals without distractions. Before eating take moments to enjoy the sights and sounds of your meal. Chew your food well as nutrients are better absorbed when properly broken down. Minimize liquids with meals because they can dilute digestive enzymes, demanding more enzyme production and slowing digestion. End meals with naturally sweet fruits and try eating until no longer hungry, instead of until you are stuffed. Practicing intentional meals becomes a healthy ritual and helps you avoid overeating.

How to see the best in your teen
1. Whatever the argument, appreciate them for having the courage to question and challenge what does not feel right to them. Celebrate that they are following their truth. 2. Remember they are pushing against the edges of what they know. If you are a part of that edge, smile and don’t take yourself so seriously. That was once your role. 3. No matter how they are showing up, all they want is love. Be that love. Sometimes that means trusting them to learn for themselves.

Create personally
Whether it’s your home or your workplace, add something of yourself to claim the space as your own. A piece of art that you’ve created yourself can add a personal element to any area. Frame a sketch you’ve done, even if it’s one you did while in school. Take a photo with an artistic angle, print an enlargement and put it on your wall. Try your hand at a craft project and display it. It may not be a masterpiece, but such a piece can give you peace all year long. Let your inner artist out!

Healthy living begins with healthy food
One positive change all aspiring and seasoned earth stewards can make is to simply shift the way one eats and shops. It focuses more on seasonal eating – supporting the actual farmers throughout the length of their growing season- buying what they have an abundance of. In coastal parts of the country farmers markets are a social event; everyone in town comes out to support the local farmers. The farmers sell out of produce quickly, making the time and effort of the seed to table process sustain itself. St. Louis has amazing farmers markets. The Tower Grove Farmers Market on Saturday mornings is a great place to interact with like minded individuals and a great time for kids. The Schlafly Farmers Market on Wednesday evenings is always a good time. The farmers need the support of the community in order to sustain their existence. Avid Locavores join a CSA and shop at the farmers market for sustainable meats, eggs, and supplemental veggies for canning and preserving.
La Vista CSA Farm is now accepting members for the 2015 season. We deliver every Saturday morning to Garden Heights Nursery on 1605 S. Big Bend Blvd.

Whether you are motivated because of sadness regarding conditions animals face, an inspiring story of a rescue or anger resulting from an abuse case, take action. Some shrug the stories off, some say “what a shame” and some shed a tear for the suffering but YOU stepped forward and decided to ACT, to HELP, to make a difference! Be Proactive!
I like the word proactive because it is very positive. I thought about titling this” How to avoid procrastination,” but even the word seems mired in guilt, accusatory. The root word crastinus( Latin) literally means “belonging to tomorrow.” So what are the benefits of becomingproactive, the art of initiating change and being prepared for tomorrow, today? Peace of mind, a feeling of strength and purpose, and a healthy feeling. Delaying the inevitable might feel like an easy choice, however it makes you feel weak, useless, and helpless. Making a plan results in feeling competent, capable, in charge. Experience personal freedom! Happy New Year!

Quit taking things so personally
Stop giving away your energy to other people in unconstructive ways. You’ll make more progress in relationships by paying attention to your own issues, than by trying to fix others. The only person you can “manage” is yourself, so put your energy to good use in this way. Take some time to look inside yourself and get to know yourself better, and understand what has shaped you into the person you are today. Not only will you benefit from this self-exploration, but so will all the other people that you have attracted in your life.

Your sleeping position
Waking up with lots of pain? Your sleeping position may be to blame. Sleeping on your back is best and puts the least amount of pressure on your lower back. Side sleeper? Place a pillow between your legs And keep your kneecaps aligned. This prevents over rotating your hips, which leads to pelvic imbalance. If one leg is longer than the other while lying on your back, chances are your pelvis is misaligned. Sorry stomach sleepers, but it’s the worst position for low back sufferers and adds almost seven times the amount of pressure to your lumbar spine, compared to back sleeping.

Make an effort to slow down & Reflect
The stress and demands of a fast-paced world allow little time for reflection. Making an effort to slow down and take time to dig deeper into our thoughts and experiences can help to develop a healthier framework with which to experience the world. Whether it is waking up early for quiet meditation, taking a lunch break to walk around the neighborhood, or contemplating a work of art, we can make small but meaningful steps towards becoming more engaged with ourselves and our surroundings.

Set a New Year’s goal instead of a resolution. Make it attainable and determine a proper reward for meeting this goal. For weight loss a proper goal could be dropping 2 pant or dress sizes. Reward yourself with a nice pair of slacks or a dress, but 2 sizes too small. The reward is fitting into those great new clothes. Keep the clothes out as a reminder of your goal. If losing weight has been difficult for you, consider seeking help. Our office offers a weight loss program called the Shape Reclaimed Diet that is a synthetic version of the HCG diet. Its’ benefits are more than just weight loss.

Structural Integration and Standing
Why is standing important? You can be relaxed and keep strains off of your body with good posture. Some of us have challenges with our necks and backs, much of this is related to how we stand. To improve your posture start with your knees at ease. They should be straight but not locked. Then check-in where the weight is in your feet. It should be balanced front to back and side to side. With this as your starting point, practice it and see what what your changes are throughout your day. Changing the alignment of the feet is part of this process and relates to walking and running.. To change the position of the feet can take time as the patterns that are holding them need to be changed slowly otherwise the body will compensate and a new pattern is created that overpowers the older. That expends a lot of extra energy.

Think about setting a new type of resolution
Far too many people adopt resolutions around the same stale goals (weight loss, money and exercise), year after year, only to end up feeling like a failure yet again. This year make a resolution to shed yourself of the limiting labels that are responsible for your seeming inability to move forward and accomplish your goals. “I’m too fat…I’m no good with money…I’m unlovable…I’m not a good enough parent…I can’t pick good partners….I have depression, etc.” Soon you believe the labels, begin to feel limited in what you can actually accomplish and there the evolution of the self-fulfilling prophecy begins. This New Year make a decision to end your self-defeating narrative, so you can remove the self-imposed roadblocks and see just how far you can go.

Tips for weight loss
Many of my clients use a food log, Fitness Pal or some other method of tracking their actual activity. Some clients discover that just parking farther from the door, taking the steps instead of the elevator and walking at their breaks allows them to burn the necessary calories to reduce weight. Others discover that using a smaller plate, splitting the meal at a restaurant and eating slowly can result in several pounds of weight loss.

2015 is a year of balance
Learning how to balance your life allows for healing to flow freely. Be kind to yourself, so when you make a choice that is not the best, you may then feel empowered to make a different choice. There is a power in choosing. If you decide to go off your meal plan, nutrients, exercise plan or meditations; please know that this is a part of your natural ebb and flow of living. When you are done with that choice, you may now move into a space of health and healing. Healing is a constant and the only constant in life is change.
