Taking The Mystery Out Of Yoga

by Gretchen Karros

The topic for this month is; VARIOUS YOGA PATHS

As you have read in several articles of “Taking the Mystery out of Yoga” the philosophy of India dates back many thousands of years, consequently it is very difficult to put a date on the beginning practice of some of the paths called “Yoga”. In addition, some people in the West who are doing Yoga do not even know there is a philosophical path that is called the “Spiritual Discipline” of Yoga except when the teacher mentions some of the diverse and often esoteric depth of Yoga.

That being said, the various paths that are available here in America, as well as their historical significance will be pointed out. Remember, the whole of the physical path of Yoga is called ”Hatha” and is translated as meaning “Sun/Moon”.

Note: there is no significance as to the order of the following paths. They are randomly chosen and each one has an Ashram or center in America.

# 1 – Himalayan Institute, founder, Swami Rama (1925-1976), present Spiritual Director, Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, Ph.D., Honesdale, PA.

# 2 – Kundalini Yoga, also known as “3HO”, Founder Yogi Bhajan (1919-2004), Linage of Sikh gurus dating from Guru Nanak (15th Century) (Kundalini teacher in St. Louis)

# 3 – Krishnamacharya (1888-1989). Present Guru, B.K.S. Iyengar, born 1915. Retired. (Iyengar studio in St. Louis)

# 4 -Vedanta Center – Founder Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), Center in St. Louis. Lectures, library and books for sale.

# 5 – Self Realization Fellowship, founder, Paramahansa Yogananda, (1893 – 1952), present Ashram, Encinitas, CA
