Disease: Treating Symptoms or Treating Causes

By Dr. Joseph F. Unger, Jr DC, FICS

The primary premise in all systems of healing is that the body heals itself. There are inherent, innate mechanisms at work. This is the claim of acupuncture beginning over 5000 years ago as well as Homeopathy are Ayurveda, various forms of energetic healing and is also true for the most modern of the therapeutic systems, Chiropractic.

From this perspective the doctor automatically assumes that the body is capable of healing itself. His/her job is therefore to identify the blockage preventing the fundamental mechanism from doing its job. In Acupuncture teachings the physician may address symptoms, but the master physician treats causes: the blockages ultimately resulting in the symptoms.
Unfortunately there is no single, easy way of doing this. People are complicated, and many factors play a role in their ability to heal. These include the acupuncture meridians, other energetic systems, nutrition, attitude, emotions, structure and neurological function to name a few. But at all times it is still preferable to return the healing capacity back to the person rather than focus on eliminating their undesirable symptoms.

In the Sacro Occipital Technic (SOT™) method of chiropractic, it is believed that healing energy flows along the nerves and in the cerebrospinal fluid, which is made in the brain and pumped throughout the entire body by what is called the Cranial Sacral Respiratory Mechanism. The doctor analyzes the functions of the various aspects of this mechanism to enact corrections, allowing the person in turn to heal her or his self.

It is a daily experience for an SOT doctor to treat a patient’s low back, only to find that a headache, neck or shoulder pain has been alleviated. Or a cranial adjustment may eliminate a stomach ache or foot pain. This is no different than when the acupuncturist or energy healer applies treatment to some part of the body that effects a change in a totally different area. When the foundational systems of health are restored to proper functioning, the power of innate healing is unleashed. The positive effects which invariably result are as varied and limitless as the patients who experience them.

An elderly and wise patient once entered my office and announced “Doctor, I do not want the treatment. I want the cure!”
