When we design spaces, we design them for the people who use them. At the Missouri Gateway Chapter of the US. Green Building Council, when highlighting a building we often focus on the sustainable materials used to build it or the super energy efficient HVAC system. At our upcoming September 14th program, Serving Community with Green & Healthy Places, we are focusing on the people who use these spaces. We are excited to feature three projects which serve and are built for our community; Edison Lofts, Rung for Women, and Doorways Campus. All of these projects support our community members in St. Louis in various capacities.
The Edison Lofts, presented by John Williams, Project Designer for Rosemann & Associates, is a historic low-income residential conversion of a YMCA. The Edison Lofts will provide homes for low-income Granite City residents, including artists and veterans. The project was built under the criteria of the National Green Building System. It’s location in the heart of downtown Granite City makes it convenient, and along with the design and construction practices, contributes to a sustainable development.
Rung for Women, presented by Leslie Gill, President of Rung for Women, is a community facility which empowers women to grow and achieve sustained independence. The building was completely renovated from an old vacant warehouse, located in the Fox Park neighborhood to a vibrant space which creates joy and support for women. This multi-functional building was designed to be welcoming while reinforcing community throughout the project.
Finally, the DOORWAYS Campus, presented by Neil Chace, Project Manager for Trivers, will provide housing services for people living with HIV/AIDS. DOORWAYS mission is to provide safe affordable housing, which is critical for diverse individuals during various phases of health and illness, for those affected by HIV/AIDS. This new headquarters located in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood will feature new housing units, community space, and office space for the organization.
