New Year’s Resolutions to Improve Quality of Life: The Path to Wellness

By Dr. Paul Hyland, DC

2019…The time for setting goals for the new year: New Year’s Resolutions. We all want to be our best selves, which is why we create these simple plans for things we would like to change. Improved health is among the most common New Year’s resolutions.

Generally people can stay on track with their resolutions at the start of the year, but as the time drags on it becomes more difficult to stick to their routine. At the end of the year, we are unhappy with our progress (or lack thereof), and the cycle repeats itself. So, how do we break this cycle? Instead of treating our resolutions as short-term goals we need to see the big picture. Wellness as a whole is what we want, so take care of your body all of the time instead of the first couple months of the year, every year.

Here comes the big question…how is wellness achieved? A complete approach to WELLNESS begins with maintaining a healthy diet, Chiropractic care to maintain internal and spinal health, and keeping a fitness routine.

We hear the phrase “we are what we eat” all the time, so what exactly does this mean? In the world of nutrition, a healthy diet is like putting clean gas into your car, do so and it runs great. If you put poor quality gas in your car you get a sputtering heap which will leave you stuck at the side of the road while life passes you by. Choosing fatty, sugary, and/or calorie dense foods may taste good, but various health problems can develop as a result. The healthy decision is not always the easy one, yet is vital to the concept of good health and wellness.

Chiropractic care is typically associated most closely with back pain, neck pain, and headaches; however we can effectively treat many other conditions too. Discover Wellness says “Chiropractic patients enjoy increased flexibility, improved posture, improved or eliminated pain, a more relaxed and calm state, and an enhanced energy level—in short, an improved overall quality of life.” With Chiropractic care, wellness can include: improved immune function, reduced inflammation, reduced hypertension, stress reduction, and improved balance. Chiropractic care can help these and more!

A well-adjusted spine, a healthy diet, and general knowledge of what is healthy do us no good if we do not have a fitness routine. Fitness is important for cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal health. It allows us to live better lives. Exercise does not have to be intense all the time. There are ways to make it fun, or at least less mundane. Regardless of it being fun or not, it is vital for our existence.

Bringing these concepts together in your life will help maximize your health and wellness. Let us help you to achieve this in your life! For more information or to schedule an appointment call Committed to Health Chiropractic Center at 314-542-2003. Or visit our website at www.committedtohealth.us
