Japanese Festival At Missouri Botanical Garden
Join the Missouri Botanical Garden in celebrating the culture and traditions of Japan when the annual Japanese Festival returns to St. Louis! This year marks the 40th Anniversary and the Garden will commemorate by offering even more sensational programming to delight the crowds. From traditional music to martial arts, bon odori dancing to bonsai, thunderous taiko drumming to Tea House Island tours, the three-day Labor Day weekend is filled with sights, sounds and experiences for the entire family. Wildwood Green Arts Announces First Session of Ceramics Classes
Non-profit brings together art, nature and community. Wildwood Green Arts has completed renovations on its ceramics studio and will begin hosting classes on September 12, 2016, on site at the arts center’s location at 2906 Ossenfort Rd. The center’s founder, Doug Gilberg, envisions many more classes in the future, ranging from photography to bee-keeping and wood-fired baking, but sees ceramic classes as the core of the center’s art instruction. With 13 wheels, three kilns and several veteran ceramic artists available to teach, opportunities for novice and intermediate students are extensive. Six week classes will include all materials (clay, tools, glazing and firing) and open studio time outside of set classes for $235 per student. Individuals may enroll in classes online at the center’s website. “The arts center and our classes are designed to offer adults an opportunity to develop their craft while creating a sense of community, supporting our collective interest in nature, the arts and each other,” Doug says. Wildwood Green Arts is a designated 501c3 non-profit organization, supporting a community of passionate artists who provide a space for curious individuals to explore and develop their creativity. Volunteers Needed for Annual Biking and Walking Counts
For the fifth year in a row, Trailnet and Great Rivers Greenway are participating in the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project. This count is very important for our region because it measures the results of biking and walking investments and helps better plan future projects. We need YOU to help us count people walking and biking at locations throughout St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County. Volunteers commit to using a pen and paper (we’ll email you a standard counting form) to count at one street location from 5-7pm on Tuesday, September 13, Wednesday, September 14, or both days. Only one person is needed per count location, but feel free to bring a friend, family member, neighbor or pet for counting company and safety in numbers. In case of rain, counts will be done the following week on September 20 and 21. Volunteers are especially needed to count in St. Charles County, North St. Louis County, Mid St. Louis County, South St. Louis County and North St. Louis City. Counts in all areas of the St. Louis region help to paint a more complete picture of where people are using walking and biking routes and where better planning for new routes and encouragement and education programs are needed. Harvest Dinner Celebrates “Park-To-Table”
Food At Tower Grove Park Includes Food Foraged And Grown In Urban Park
Tickets are on sale now for the first-ever Harvest Dinner at Tower Grove Park, a new event celebrating food that is grown and foraged in the 289-acre park. Dinner will feature a menu prepared by Chef Heather Stone of Taste, and will be held in an outdoor garden at the Park. The evening will include a walkthrough of the vegetable garden with the Park’s Horticulture Supervisor, Steve Hogenmiller. Each plate of the five-course menu will feature food grown in Tower Grove Park, including fresh herbs, radishes, squash, paw paws, beets, and eggs from the Park’s chickens. The Park’s flock of Cochin chickens grew this past year with a gift of four unique heritage breed chickens from celebrity gardener P. Allen Smith. Green Schools Quest Registration Deadline
The Green Schools Quest challenges public and private schools in Missouri and southern Illinois to devise and implement, with the help of green mentors, the most creative, effective and no or low cost sustainable practices for their schools. Each school participating in the Green Schools Quest will be encouraged to form a Green Team. Teams may be a single classroom, a student club, a grade level, or an entire school. Each team will select a low or no cost sustainability-related project to begin in October 2016 and conclude in March 2017. A Green Mentor will be assigned to each Green Team to assist with project planning and implementation. The school registration deadline is September 15!
