SLiiM began as a “grassroots group of physicians” brought together by Kristen Brokaw, Sales Rep for Ortho Molecular Products and Eric Nielson from Spectra Cell Laboratories in 2008 and has been meeting for over two years. Their goal is to:
1. Unite like-minded physicians in the St. Louis and surrounding area to develop a referral network.
2. Discuss pertinent health topics from an integrative perspective.
3. Raise awareness that St. Louis has a growing community of main-stream integrative practitioners believing symptom management doesn’t need to be a way of life.
Involved in Landmark Education and a course called Self-Expression Leadership Program, Kristen was to develop a project that affected between 20-250 people in her community. Reflecting back to the first meeting two years prior, Kristen remembered Dr. Octavio Chirino commenting, “Someday, I’d like to see this group become the St. Louis Institute for Integrative Medicine,” not really knowing what that looked like. In an instant, Kristen knew immediately what her project would be.
Sharing her enthusiasm for taking this grass-roots group to the next level, several doctors caught her vision and stepped right up, eager to develop the first annual SLiiM Symposium.
So, who is SLiiM? SLiiM is a society of physicians who are solely concerned with prevention, wellness and finding the root cause for patient disease states. SLiiM prides itself on treating the patient, not the disease. Our expertise encompasses many medical disciplines such as Obstetrics and Gynecology, Rheumatology, Cardiology, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Internal Medicine, Osteopathy, Environmental Medicine, Chiropractic, Naturopathic Medicine, Homeopathic Medicine, Dental and Pharmacy. Our goal is to collaborate with other physicians, along with educating our community, to implement a restorative model for optimal healthcare versus symptom management.
Aligning ourselves with the Institute of Functional Medicine, our beliefs are grounded in scientific principles, combining research from various disciplines to implement proven, effective treatment for restoring vibrant health to our patients. Doctor’s offices are flooded with patients looking for ways to optimize their health. The tides have turned and we are thrilled to see patients taking responsibility for their health. Folks are realizing they can’t afford to get sick, therefore, are taking the necessary steps to change the way they view healthcare through personal lifestyle choices like never before.
We anticipate growing our SLiiM society and are working toward membership status for practitioners believing in our philosophy.
