Home Eco Helps Solve
Electronics Recycling Puzzle
Every day, discarded electronics products, also known
as e-waste, end up
in landfills or incinerators, contaminating the land,
water and air with
heavy metals like lead, cadmium and mercury. According
to the EPA,
Americans generate more e-waste than any other culture
in the world,
sending millions of tons of toxic electronic components
to landfills
each year, partly because consumers don’t know
what else to do with
their obsolete computers, monitors, cell phones or VCRs.
As part of its mission to make it easier for St. Louisans
to be part of
the solution and live more sustainably, Home Eco offers
a variety of
recycling programs at the store, including an electronics
recycling
drive on the first Saturday of every month from 10 until
noon, in
conjunction with St. Louis Teachers Recycling Center,

Volunteers from St. Louis Teachers Recycling Center
collect monitors,
keyboards, mice, CPUs and assorted other electronics
and turn them in to
D-Cal Services (http://www.dcalservices.com/faqs.asp)
for recycling.
D-Cal is a computer recycling center and is registered
with both the EPA
and the state of Missouri Department of Natural Resources
and meets all
of their respective requirements.
A donation of $10 is requested for each small consumer
electronic or
computer component dropped off, and $20 for computer
monitors. At this
time, we are unable to accept televisions.
St. Louis’ only green general store, Home Eco opened
