Ask the Herb Lady

With Cathy Burkemper

Q: What is selenium and why should I take it?

A: Selenium is a trace mineral that, most commonly, works as a synergist with Vitamin E as an antioxidant. Research has shown that individuals with cardiovascular disease, asthma, liver disease, MS and those with food allergies have been shown to have low levels of selenium.

Selenium is also effective in the treatment of thyroid problems.

Q: Is chamomile good for upset stomachs?

A: Chamomile is widely known for its relaxing effect and is commonly taken before bedtime. However, because it acts as a mild sedative, it has smooth muscle relaxing activity. There are smooth muscles located in the organs of the digestive tract and they can go into spasm or cramp up, causing digestive upset. Chamomile is particularly beneficial for stomach upset that occurs from stress or nervousness.
