Ask the Herb Lady
With Cathy Burkemper, CNHP and Certified Herbalist
Q: I am trying to lose a few pounds but I am having
a great deal of difficulty in giving up bread. Other
than eating low cal breads, what can I do?
A: As you probably already know, breads are carbohydrates.
Our bodies process carbs by turning them into glucose
or sugar. We end up burning most of the glucose but
the rest is stored as fat. There are supplements that
can change the way dietary starches (from the carbohydrates)
are digested, which causes the undigested starches to
be carried into the intestinal tract where they can
simply be eliminated. Look for supplements made from
white kidney beans. They should be taken before a meal
that contains carbohydrates in order to be the most
effective.
Q: I have heard that Vitamin C is good for allergies.
Is that true?
A: Vitamin C is one of the most important supplements
to aid in the treatment of allergies. It is the primary
antioxidant in the lungs and is a very powerful antihistamine
that does not have side effects. Allergens provoke our
bodies to produce histamines which cause symptoms such
as sneezing, itchy watery eyes, coughs and congestion.
Vitamin C prevents the formation of histamines rather
than interfering with the binding of histamine as most
common medications can. Try taking 1,000 mg. three to
five times per day for relief.
