The cool spring weather we are experiencing this year could be a metaphor for St. Louis from now on.  Some scientists predict that the effect of global warming in our region is likely to be cooler, wetter weather interspersed with hotter, drier weather.  Global warming is the cause but climate disruption may be the effect.

We may not be able to do much about the shifting weather patterns in the short run but we can keep our cool and get to work on long term solutions, and we can have fun doing it.

Yeah, that’s right, it’s party time!  Groups like 350.org have declared 2010 as Climate Work Party Year.  Hey, if former President George Bush can tell us the answer to the recession is to go shopping, why can’t the answer to global warming be to party on, Dude?

These are important parties, however, with serious consequences.  Climate disruption is no laughing matter, but we don’t have to get all morbid about it. We just have to get to work and ask our political leaders to follow our lead.

I know you don’t generally use the words work and party in the same sentence but hey, it’s 2010 and it’s suddenly very cool to be a climate geek and get to work with your friends on saving civilization and the planet.

In St. Louis and elsewhere the really cool people are gearing up for a totally awesome, blow out, Global Work Party on 10-10-10.

To prove that this can actually be a lot of fun, the 2020 St. Louis Climate Leadership Campaign and the St. Louis 350 Collaboration are hosting a FUNdraiser called ‘Cool St. Louis Cafe’ at the Contemporary Art Museum on Friday, June 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Also at the Contemporary, critically acclaimed artist Scot Hocking will have an exhibition of his installation at Culver Way Ecovillage on display in the Front Room, running from June 16 to July 11, and he will be doing a panel discussion with members of the Culver Way development team (see www.stl350.com for details on both events).
